Park Information

Oakhill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium is situated to the south of the Welwyn Hatfield borough, providing residents and visitors with a peaceful place of reflection. The grounds were opened on the 2nd April 1984 by the lord Bishop of Hertford and covers some 11 acres of land. It is among the few cemeteries in the United Kingdom to have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award.

In the main section of the cemetery hold lawn graves, where the size and shape of memorials are constrained to ensure a unified design, by encouraging well maintained grass.

Part of the cemetery has been specially designed in partnership with the local Muslim community, providing burial spaces which comply with Islamic teachings. These graves are aligned perpendicular to the Qibla (Mecca).

We have Mausoleums situated undercover in our mulberry tree garden, providing the option of above-ground burial. These marble fronted chambers are a popular alternative way of burial in the Catholic and Italian traditions, when families do not wish to be buried in the earth, or cremated.

The cemetery hosts a crematorium with a non-denominational chapel, that looks out onto the colour changing reflection pond and gardens, offering a dignified setting for services to personalise and remember loved ones. Completed in 2023, the design makes it perfect for intimate gatherings, but can also accommodate largely attended funerals. This state-of-the-art chapel is finished in Scandinavian wood, has underfloor heating powered by recycled heat from the cremator, with solar panels and green sedum on the roof. The facilities are wheelchair accessible throughout, with a waiting room and toilets.

There are outdoor toilets with baby changing facilities for the use of any visitor, available during office hours. The newly built carpark has over 100 spaces, includes disabled bays and the provision for eight bicycles next to the office reception entrance.

The grounds also contain various options to commemorate cremated remains, including our Rose Garden, Mulberry Tree Garden, Jasmine Garden, Lily Garden and our communal garden area for scattering ashes. These offer a choice of memorials in an area which encourages quiet contemplation.

Our memorial attenuation pond (The Lily Garden) has attracted wildlife including herons and common linnets. Bats have been sighted in the area and we have put up special bat boxes and have a nest box for our resident kestrel.

Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium is located less than one mile from the A1M and can be accessed via public transport with a bus stop situated a five-minute walk from the cemetery gates. Please keep dogs on a lead at all times.
