Hypocaust (Roman Mosaic)

Site of historical interest

The 1800 year old hypocaust (roman central heating) and its covering mosaic floor were uncovered during excavations in Verulamium Park in the 1930s by Sir Mortimer & Tessa Wheeler.

It was decided to leave these in their original Roman location where they formed part of the reception and meeting rooms of a large town house. The preserved section was part of a suite that originally extended almost twice the surviving length of the room.

Park Information

Verulamium Park is set in 100 acres of beautiful parkland close to the city centre and is a popular attraction throughout the year with wide range of facilities.

The Park is named after the Roman City of Verulamium on which it stands and you will discover large sections of the Roman city wall still intact.  You will also find a well preserved mosaic which once formed part of large town house. Pay a visit Verulamium Museum to find out more about the Roman city and the incredible discoveries that archaologists have made over the years.

Today the park is the perfect place for play and enjoyment.  Children will love the splash park and play area, while people of all ages will enjoy both the golf course and crazy golf course.  Sports and fitness fans are well catered for Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre in addition to an adiZone outdoor gym and many other sports facilities.  After a day of activity, the Inn on the Park café is the perfect place to relax with a drink and a bite to eat.

Walking through the tranquil parkland landscape it is hard to imagine the hustle and bustle of city life that was once present.  The park is now a haven for wildlife and rich in biodiversity.  Visit the lake to discover the island heronry and view up close the many breeding pairs of majestic grey heron.  Learn about the important wildlife of the River Ver by following one of the many trails that lead through the park and out into the surrounding countryside.
